March 2017 Travels | Globe, AZ

Hello from the Galkin Team!

There has been an obvious theme of cacti, sand, and western desert throughout our travels this semester! On several different occasions throughout the Bible, God used the desert as a training ground to teach His children about Himself and our utter need for Him. Thankful for those daily reminders!

Some of our team, along with Will and a few pastors, will be traveling throughout Israel over these next few weeks. Many prayers would be appreciated for their trip! —not only for safety in travels, but also that they would be encouraged and challenged in their faith as they see first-hand places where Jesus and His followers lived, walked, and taught. What an exciting opportunity!

We want to share with you what God has been doing in communities, churches, and individuals.

Our team recently served for a short week at Central Heights Baptist Church in Globe—located in east-central Arizona. Globe has been a mining town since the 1800s and has had an important role in the mining and copper industries for more than a century. Big cities in the USA oftentimes get the “front page attention”, but it’s the small cities—like Globe—that actually represent most of our nation.

Pastor Jason Crother and his family moved to Central Heights Baptist in Globe with a great burden for their community and have lived there for about four years. Although four years sometimes feels like forever, there are those who have lived in Globe for their whole lives. The church members will tell you that “this younger generation [in the area] is having to raise themselves” because of the broken family units. Although having attended church years before, there is a “been there/done that” mentality. There is no desire of involvement with the local church, with the gospel, or with God. In essence, they truly have a shallow understanding of who God is and what the gospel is. And yet in all of this, the Crothers along with their church body have such an opportunity to be a light in this dark and needy city.

Knowing that the Lord has been working through the Crothers’ and their faithful work these past four years, we were excited to spend a few days with them. Even within the past year at the church, professions of faith and obvious growth have been occurring in individual lives. What an exciting time! Some would say the change is “small”, but who are we to measure God’s work? We were not called to be successful, but faithful in our serving the Lord.

After the Sunday evening service at Central Heights Baptist, Will was able to speak with a man and talk through the gospel. Throughout their conversation and talking through his past, this man was basically revealing his depravity. Amid lots of brokenness, it was a great testimony of the Truth that we who are broken are whom Christ died for. Mid-conversation, this man exclaimed to Will, “I..Want..That!” The gospel. He got it. And he wanted Christ.  “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any many should boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 ). He realized his need for saving grace and called out to Christ.

Another testimony of the Lord doing a work was when a cyclist who rode his bicycle from the town over and visited for an evening service. As we began to get to know him, he shared that he has been saved for just a year. His testimony and love for the Lord and His Word was an encouragement to all who spoke with him. The Lord is really doing a work in individual lives in Globe, Arizona. Life touching life for the gospel is what makes eternal differences.

The Great Creator who made the visible mountains outside loves us and desires to intentionally be involved in our lives. Lamentations 3:21-23 says, “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.”

God is faithful, and we know that He is growing His church as we continue to pursue and obey Him. It was a privilege to serve with Central Heights Baptist in the area where God is using them to serve the community. Albeit short, we loved our time with them greatly and are excited for the churches we serve with such as Central Heights where the Lord is continuing to change lives!

Thank you for your continued support through prayers and giving. We are in over our heads!—with serving churches, raising family, discipling team, etc. And yet even throughout the crazy times in life, God is so good!

For the gospel,

The Galkin Team
